Reunion at Laiya, Batangas

Tonette was home for a one-month vacation so we thought of having our block reunion at Laiya Batangas. Laiya is about 140+km from Manila. It is located on the southeastern tip of the province of Batangas. It is known for its white beaches, good snorkeling and fishing.

We stayed at Sigayan Bay Beach Resort as suggested by Lissy. We haven't been there so we had no idea what to expect. Sigayan for me is quite nice since it is a family resort equipped with kitchen equipment and faciities in every cottage like gas stove, sink, refrigerator, water dispenser among others. The cottage that we reserved was quite small so we upgraded to a bigger one and since we did not bring anything to cook, we opted to dine out. The resto in Sigayan would take you around 30 minutes or so before you can eat so make sure you order beforehand. The staff were nice as they also arrange boat ride to explore Laiya cove.

We went snorkling, visited a cove, and tried food in other resorts like Kabayan and Punta Miguel. Compared to other places like Anawagin, Guimaras, Pagudpud, etc., Laiya offers simple shoreline but is a good alternative to Puerto Galera and other Batangas beaches due to its proximity.

After staying overnight in Laiya, the group decided to have merienda in Tagaytay before calling it a night, bringing good memories from our college years up to now. Looking forward to our next year's reunion.

Potipot Island: Calmness of Water and Island Combined

For our team outing, we decided to hit the beach and one of the places in mind was Potipot Island. It is located in in Uacon, Candelaria, Zambales more than a kilometer from the mainland. Potipot Island is like an oblong-shaped island that is surrounded by fine white sands and calm clear water. Added to that is the vegetation in the area that shades you from the heat of the sun.

As there are no resorts on the island, we stayed at Marj's friend rest house in Masinloc, Zambales were we cooked our own food. You may rent motor boats for Uacon for P 500 round trip and rent nipa hut cottages in the island for P 500 also. But should you want to stay overnight near the the island, you may book in the nearest resort such as Dawal and Isla Verde.

The island is well maintained as there are designated trash cans and area for cooking. There is also a 50-peso entrance fee on the island.

How to get there

Uacon is about 46km north of Iba, the capital of Zambales. From Manila, take the North Expressway and exit at San Fernando. From San Fernando, head southwestward all the way toward Olongapo City. Right before the city boundary of Olongapo, there is a bypass way via the Subic Base Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) which you may want to take to avoid passing through the city. Take this bypass road through SBMA and exit at its Kalaklan gate then head northwestward to Subic town, Castillejos, Sn Marcelino, up to the T-junction near San Narciso.

At the T-junction near San Narciso, turn right and head north through the towns of San Narciso, San Felipe, Cabangan, Botolan, up to Iba. From Iba, head for Masinloc then towards Candelaria. Do not enter Candelaria town proper. Instead, head straight, and continue along the National Road while keeping an eye for the signs that lead to Dawal Beach Resort in Uacon. Head for Dawal Beach resort.

Coto, Zambales: Catching Fresh Water and Air in Coto Mountain Resort

On our second day team outing in Zambales, we decided to visit Coto Kidz Pool Mountain Resort right inside Coto mining site in Coto, Masinloc, Zambales. I must say, the rough road was so rough! nakakabaog for it took us almost one hour to reach the resort. But the scenery treated us with irony for there are lush greens and picture perfect views and yet you will also see the environmental impact of mining in the area. It was worth the trip when we reached the resort for it seemed you're in a enchanted place with fresh water flowing down the stream as well as water falls that soothes your stress with the sound of its flowing water.

One can stay overnight and rent an airconditioned cottage for P 1,500. For day trippers, one may rent a cottage right beside the river for P 500. Don't miss the balsa to cross the other side of the river to treat you with more sights and cross the hanging bridge going back.

Coto Mines

It is known as the nation’s biggest deposit of refractory ore in the world. It is 27 kms of well paved and winding gravel road from barangay baloganon to the camp site and commuted through a transportation concessionaire plying the route coto-baloganon at government controlled fare.

baloganon is about 3 kms from the main national highway. victory liner has buses on that route from manila (about 5 hrs bus ride). From baloganon, it's more than an hour before you reach the kidz swimming pools (coto mines) right at the foot of the forest. It's in the town called masinloc (2 hrs from olongapo).

Footsteps: Going to Guimaras

Book a flight going to Iloilo. Our airline of choice is Cebu Pacific. As you reach Iloilo International Airport, hire a van and ask to take you at Ortiz Port. The usual van route will take you up to SM Iloilo but since the new airport is far from the city proper, it is advisable to hire a van. We paid around P 500.

When you reach Ortiz Port, take a boat going to Jordan. The trip is less than 30 minutes and the fare is P 13. Remember that it is strictly prohibited to bring mango fruit, seedling and the like in Guimaras to protect their mango variety and the industry.

As you reach Jordan, you have option to hire a multi-cab or take a jeepney or tricycle to bring you to your destination. We opted to hire a multicab for P 400. The price is standardized so no need to worry.

Guimaras people are very accommodating as evidenced by our encounter with the multicab driver, boatman, resort staff, and others. They maintain that Illonngo culture of being malambing. Though life in Guimaras is simple, they take pride of their interesting places and mangoes .

It was a good retreat! it's worth the trip!

Footnote: Raymen Beach Resort

We're supposed to book at villa igang but no one was there when we arrived. When I asked Kuya Jesus our driver, he told us it's better to stay at Raymen so our feet led us to raymen beach resort.

It's facilities are relatively new as they offer hotel-like accommodation. We took the P1,100 room because they only offer local tv channel s so we opted to let go of television. Fan rooms are simpler than air-conditioned rooms.

Unlike some reviews, we find raymen staff accommodating and the place is relatively peaceful. Added to that is access to good food for they have a cafeteria where you can order from their menu or buy fresh catch from local fishermen and ask the café to cook it for a minimal fee.

Raymen's shoreline is relatively small but it has fine white sand. The beach front is protected by safety nets for protection of its guests, as well as supervised by local lifeguards.

Cottages are also available for day trippers.

Island Hopping in Guimaras

It was 8 am in the morning and the sun and sea is one with our craving for interesting places in Guimaras. We didn't not see the boatman who offered island tours the other day so we took chances and ask one of the island tour stations along Raymen beach. It's nice to know that island tour is standardized in Guimaras. They charge P 400 for the first hour and additional P 150 for succeeding hour.

After a sumptous breakfast, we took our gears and money to tour the island. We took a yellow boat owned by Charlie and went to diffent places around Guimaras. He's so accomodating, articulate and tourist-friendly. He is a good photographer as we let him take our photos. If you're in Guimaras, he can pick you up from Jordan port and he can meet you in Raymen Beach Resort. His mobile number is 09293100842.It took us almost 10 spots all in all in just three and a half hours so it's worth the boat ride.

We went to Pawikan Caring and Feeding Station situated in a nearby community. It was my first time to touch a pawikan and it's quite heavy. When you visit the station, make sure to bring extra money as they encourage any monetary donations for maintenance of the facility.

After that we passed through several beaches and islets that are undeveloped. Then we stopped at Ave Maria Cave to snorkel. We were not able to swim right inside the cave for it is so majestic that you want to look at it from the outside. A sea urchin hit my toes so I decided to stay near the boat while we stopped bleeding.

On the other side of Ave Maria, we took a dip in a white sand beach. There we had our traditional jump and shoot travel photos. hehe...

We had a breaktaking view when we stopped in baras beach resort and walked up the cliff. It felt like you're one with everything you see. There were many foreigners booked in baras beach as it is one of the secluded resorts in Guimaras since it can be reached through a pump boat.

Isla Naburot is also one of the secluded resorts in the Island and its cottages are made of native materials that reminds everyone of bahay-kuho. There is no electricity in Isla but is situated in a quiet and peacefull location.

On our way back to Raymen, we passed through other interesting places like properties own by foreigners and lighthouse. We bought fresh samaral fish and lobster for P 520 when we arrived at Raymen. yum!

Pitstop: Guimaras Foodies

It’s a good thing we stayed in Raymen Beach Resort because they served good food in their cafeteria. On our first day, we tried their grilled boneless bangus, chopseuy and molo soup for lunch. You can taste the freshness of their bangus together with the chopseuy and the authenticity of their very own molo soup. The molo soup was notable because they add egg to balance the taste of molo wrapper as this has tendency to make the soup a bit salty.

For dinner on our first night, we ordered grilled squid stuffed with tomatoes and onions, sinigang na baboy and ensaladang talong. I’m a squid lover so I liked their grilled posit but I noticed it was a bit small for its price. The sinigang na baboy was okay for me but the fat was a bit thick and the soup was oily. I’m not a fan of eggplant but their ensaladang talong was fresh as it was combined with tomatoes and onions and soaked in their native vinegar which was too strong for me. But it’s generally good.

For breakfast, we had the usual Filipino food like tapa, tocino, egg and their local tuyo, uga tabagak which is the cheapest in their menu. Their tocino was fried with onions that made its sweet blend was very good as it combined sugar and sweetness of onions. So good! There beef tapa was not that tender though also taste good. Their local tuyo was deep fried perfectly as you can eat it as it is. Their uga tabagak is considered as our staple food as we order it even for dinner.

After our island hopping trip, a fisherman approached us and sold his three samaral fishes and three lobsters for on Php 500 plus. Without hesitations, we bought all his seafoods and asked the cook at the cafeteria to grill the fish and make some sinigang and cook the lobster for us. It was a feast for it was so cheap. You can’t buy a lobster in Manila for that price. Samaral fish was so good as it tasted like maya-maya fish.

For our second night dinner, we ordered pinakbet, beef steak, grilled liempo and pancit lomi. Their pinakbet was similar to native Ilocano pinakbet which has a strong taste of bagoong. The beef steak had a strong kalamansi kick that I liked so much while their lomi used other noodle instead of miki. Sarap! Their liempo taste good so the fat was so thick.

Pitstop: Guimaras Native Delicacies and Products

On our way to Jordan Wharf to ride a ferry going back to Iloilo from Guimaras, we asked kuya Jesus to drop by Guimaras’ Pasalubong Center. I never knew Guimaras has other native delicacies aside from their well-known mangoes. They have fruit piaya made of either langka, pineapple, cashew or mango; mango jam, mango puree, and would you believe mango ketchup. I’m not sure about their mango ketchup but I bought all their piaya variety except for langka and other products made from Trappist Monastery in Guimaras. Looking at the labels of these products, it is nice to know that the Department of Science and Technology assisted the manufacturers in packaging their products to make it at par and marketable to both local and foreign buyers.

Guimaras also have native products such as soap dish made of wood, native coin purse, bamboo sofa, wooden pens, key chains, etc. We also asked manong to take us to a nearby market to buy mangoes.

We already made reservation before going to Iloilo in another hotel but our friends who came from Bora told us there was a relatively new but cheaper hotel named One Lourdes Dormitel in Fuentes St., Iloilo City. When we arrived in Ortiz port from Guimaras, we took a cab and asked the manong to drop us in the said hotel. The driver didn’t know its exact location so we had to drive along the entire Fuentes Street. When we found the hotel, you may immediately notice that it is a hotel unless you see their signage because the ground floor is being used as a warehouse. You have to pass by the gate on the side of the building for you to find the entrance to the dormitel.

The lobby is relatively small but its interior is good as you will also be greeted by its accommodating staff. The dormitel is a three-floor accommodation that offers amenities such as: dining area, elevator, free wifi, room service, arrangement for airport transfer, among others.

What I like about this dormitel is they managed to maximize their space without compromising comfort of its guests. We booked a room that is good for four that only cost Php 900 a night. It has air-conditioner, two matrimonial beds, TV, desk, cabinet, comfort room with hot and cold shower among others.

Since we felt at home in this hotel, we scrapped some late night plans just to spend time bumming around our room. The hotel exceeded our expectations though we only stayed overnight. Now we have a second home when you go back to Iloilo.

Iloilo Churches

We decided to visit some churches in Iloilo after we ate at Tatoy’s. We took a jeep from Tatoy’s and went to Sto. Nino De Arevalo Parish Church in Arevalo. After that, we took another jeep that has a sign “Villa” and dropped by Molo Church in Molo, Iloilo. Then we took another jeep going to Baluarte to visit San Jose Church in Libertad.

As we went along, I can’t help but notice the usual Spanish Colonial setting where the Church is always near the public plaza and schools. It was a good feeling staying on these Plazas for a while and see people from different walks of life make their own escape and find space within a cool breeze of fresh air to relieve stress and set perspective. One can’t replace that feeling of oneness with your own world while killing some time in a public plaza.

After our church hopping, we decided to drop by Robinson's Place Iloilo to buy supplies when we saw flowers and plants being sold right at the central plaza. Display on recently held Dinagyang Festival can still be seen in the mall.

Right after we went back to Iloilo and checked-in in One Lourdes Dormitel, we headed straight to Tatoy’s which is considered as one of the most popular restaurant in Iloilo. We took a cab since it’s a bit far from the city proper as it is located along the sea side in a place called Villa. Tatoy’s interior is simple as it is made of wood and uses bamboo as dining tables. I thought we just have to sit and the waiter will take our order but we had to approach the counter to make our order.

We ordered their famous litson manok which is grilled using native chicken. Their one whole chicken was relatively smaller compared to whole chicken you can buy from supermarket but the taste was good especially when dipped in their special sauce.

We also ordered lechon which was so tasty coz you may eat it on its own with or without the sauce. I think this is the distinction of lechon made in Visayas region; they put spices right inside the lechon so you may eat it on its own.

The healthiest among the food we tasted was sinigang na tanigue. I personally liked how they prepared it because it was not too sour and the fish was so fresh which are complemented by vegetables.

After a sumptuous meal, buko juice flushed all the toxins as the coconut meat was also served on its own coconut shell. We paid around Php 800 and it’s all worth it.

When it comes to pasalubong, one can find delicious delicacies at Bicocho Haus. Aside from their special bischoco, you can also buy other foodies such as crunchy mamon, mango bar, barquillos, barquiroll, etc.

On that same night, we were treated by family friends of Marj at Alfrique’s, an Italian restaurant situated in an ancestral house transformed into a resto. They had pizza and pasta for us which are at par with some Italian-inspired restaurant in Manila. We had a bottle of beer in MO2 located in Small Ville afterwards. Smallville is considered as the gimmick place in Iloilo since it is where high-end bars, hotels and restaurants are located.

PITSTOP: Arya Persian Restaurant

I was on leave and decided to meet a friend for so many years, Liz to catch up with so many things. After her gym and my shopping, we head to an Asian inspired restaurant for we were craving for Asian food. At first, we thought of dining at a Thai Resto but they were closed that time and only served Vietnamese food. But since the ambiance was a bit casual, we found a resto nearby that serves Persian food. It's Arya Persian Restaurant in Robinson's Place Midtown.

I only know kebab for a Persian food so I didn't miss it but we had to ask the waiter to explain the differences in the menu for there were terms we didn't undertstand. The taste of their beef and chicken kebabs was excellent and the pita bread with garlic and chili sauce provided that Persian kick.

It's reasonably priced for P 300+ per meal but the experience trying something new and see a good friend made the experience complete.

Arya Persian Resturant is located at the 2nd Level of the Robinson's Midtown.

FOOT STEPS: Iloilo and Guimaras for only P 300+

Yup, we'll only pay P 300+ for a two-way trip to Iloilo on February. Thanks to the December 25-26 seat sale of Cebu Pacific. They offered limited seats for travels made from February to March. It was a feast! We were just finalizing our plans to go to Davao for less than 500 pesos but when I was about to refresh their website, it's gone! It sold like pancakes so we ended up booking for an Iloilo flight and will go to Guimaras just to avail the promo.

PITSTOP: Harbor View, San Miguel by the Bay

After the coolest party (ahaha..), we decided to eat because the food was not enough for us. As we walked along the San Miguel by the Bay, we end up eating Harbor View Resturant. It's right in front of the Imax Theater in SM Mall of Asia.

We ordered Binagoongang Baboy which is a bit spicy but has crunchy pork, breaded oysters with veggies which taste like tempura with that usual oyster taste, and spaghetti with beef meat balls (I love it).

They have a promo of six beers for P 350 with a choice of pulutan.

Christmas at San Miguel by the Bay

We just attended the "so-called" coolest party on ice (hehe), but our gastronomic needs and boredom led us to San Miguel by the Bay right at the back of SM Mall of Asia. It is obvious that beers are all San Mig products as this is considered as the new Bay Walk when the mayor of Manila ordered the closure of the strip of restos along Roxas Blvd.

I miss Bay Walk but I don't mind having this new bay strip because it's a well-planned place because the structures of restos are of same sizes since they have their respective stalls (units). It's safer for me because it's in a privately-run property and there's is a clean rest room. hehe...

One can notice the giant Christmas tree made of steels as you walk along the strip. What a good way to end the night!

PITSTOP: Going Chinese

We're number one and that called for a celebration. Living a philosophy of 3M: Mura, Madami, Masarap; we've found this place that has been in existence since the 1980's. It has beem a favorite venue for weddings and events for the past 30 years with function rooms that can accomodate from 10 to 850 persons. This time, we satisfied our hunger Chinese style.

The Big Dome and The Green Archers

There's no place like the Araneta Coliseum for big collegiate games such as the UAAP. The Big Dome is obviously not enough for fans to watch basketball games expecially the rivalry between De La Salle Green Archers and Ateneo.

I was so fortunate that time enabled me to follow the Season 71 of the UAAP and all the games of DLSU Green Archers. Though it didn’t turn out the way the Lasallian Community expected, the Green Archers gave a good show and over achieved given the limitation. I was able to watch the 1st round DLSU-NU, 2nd round DLSU-Ateneo, FInal Four, and Finals Series.

Though Ateneo thought they would have dominance of the collegiate leagues this year, it ain’t over till the fat lady sings. Just today, the De La Salle Green Archers beat Ateneo (71-62) in the finals of the Philippine Collegiate Championship League which is considered as the mother of all leagues because it goes beyond UAAP and NCAA. Off course I also watched it live even if friends were not available to join me. The champion of this tournament will represent the country in the Universiade (World University Games) baskeball tournamanet in Serbia.

The De La Salle Green Archers had beaten University of San Carlos, University of the East and San Beda College before having a date with Ateneo to spoil the Blue’s short lived dominance. I find time to watch the PCCL finals because this is the last stand of JV Casio in the collegiate league wearing DLSU Green Archer Jersey. He did not disappoint us together with the rest of the team.

Looking forward for another year of collegiate basketball games since the Green Archers are relatively intact with Rico leading another campaign. I enjoy watching collegiate games instead of professional games because it includes heart and pride for the glory of one's school. Though once in a while I get to watch Sunday Salvacion, who was from DLSU-College of Saint Benilde, doing good stuff for Barangay Ginebra Kings. His dominance led to the Senior Baskeball Championship of DLS-CSB in NCAA in 2001, three years after the school joined the league.

Though it may be a bitter sweet year, the green and white and the entire Lasallian community continuously fight to keep its glory bright and never shall we fail...

PITSTOP: Dad's Merienda Buffet

It's 2 pm and that gastronomic need is upon us. What better way to satisfy hunger is to indulge in good food with affordable price. Since it's way past lunch time, our usual resto of choice is Dad's in Megamall for they offer merienda buffet for only P 139 pesos.

They serve different Filipino merienda from kakanin, pancit, dinuguan, spag, banana / camote cue, palabok, lugaw, tokwa't baboy, lumpiang ubod. They also have siomai, siopao, and desserts like cream puff, cake, puto, etc.

yum! yum! oh, it also includes kamayan and saisaki for an additional price...

I was cleaning my room when a replica of Ifugao House fell from the top of my television. There I realized there are many small items I bought / given by friends and relatives. Below are my island souvenirs from across the Philippines and beyond, together with their sentimental value:

These items are so previous to me. Way back in my volunteering years, we used to wear these as sign of our commitment to what we do and as a sign of being one with humanity.

Tubao (purple, red, green with checkered design) is like a handkerchief made by the Manobos and other indigenous peoples in Mindanao that can be used as a turban or head cover especially when you are traveling in a tropical country like the Philipines. I got my tubaos from different places like Cagayan de Oro and Bacolod. Some of my tubao’s were given by my officemates, student volunteers, and other co-volunteers. Too bad, though, that some of my tubao’s were misplaced during our volunteer formation sessions.

Malong is a traditional “tube skirt’ made of handwoven or machine-made multi-colored cotton cloth, with a variety of designs that is traditionally used as a garment of different tribes in Mindanao like the Maranao, Maguindanao, and T’boli weavers. It is similar to the sarong worn in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. It can be used as a skirt, a dress, a blanket, a sunshade, a bedsheet, a “dressing room, a prayer mat, and other purposes.

The blue-checkered malong (upper right side) came from Indonesia. I asked Luthfi, our fellow Indonesian student leader then, to buy one for me. It’s so much similar to the ones that we have in the Philippines but is for half body only. My malong from Zambaoanga, given by Lissy was misplaced during our fashion show that featured locally-made products. Sorry Liz.

I already had the scarf from Cagayan de Oro before the so-called “terrorist scarf” was popularized around the world and in the Philippines, making some critics concerned. The Keffiyeh scarves is a traditional headdress for men in the Middle East, folded and wrapped in different styles around the head or neck, which has become a fashion trend these days. I don’t know about them but wearing one before made you look baduy but for me it works like a malong for it has many uses. For bald people like me (ahaha), I find it an instant relief from sweat and shades from the sun. I usually bring a scarf when I travel in the provinces before and during volunteer trainings because when times go bad, the scarf will save the day. It also looks good to professional and amateur photographers who find their way out to get better pictures. But it has never been part of my every day fashion.

I got this bow and arrow from Botolan, Zambales during our immersion activities with the group of Aetas, Lakas Pamayan. They were displaced by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo but they were able to organize into a dignified community. I admire the leadership and the culture of our fellow Aetas. As they welcome intervention from other communities and institutions, they make it a point that their traditions will be preserved and visitors will get to appreciate their culture. Bow and arrow is usually used for hunting and to defend their perimeter against aggressors.

I also got a “sumpit” or a blow gun. It has a hollow tube from which a dart or an arrow is blown by a person’s breath. In the ancient times, the arrow was usually tipped with a poison. Unfortunely, I left by blown gun in my previous office. I’m not sure if it’s still there.

I have so many keychains as souvenirs from different places. Some are being used while some are on display since I don’t have enough keys to use these. The light blue keychain with ‘awesome bohol’ is from Jini during her recent trip. Wooden key chains from Baguio was given by Amor, the plastic chain with ‘bora’ from Marj and the chain that looks like a sting ray is from Shing. The three metallic chains are from Hong Kong (Marj), Japan (Mon), and Singapore (Adama). The Enchanted Kingdom chain with green background from Jini and the other was a remembrance from my blockmates’ trip in 1998. When you look on the hole and point the chain to a lighted area, you will see our group photo. I still have hair on that photo so it’s a treasure. Hehe…

Who among the male population in the Philippine haven’t worn barong in their lifetime? Barong Tagalog (or simply barong) came from the word ‘baro’ or dress. It is an embroidered formal garment of the Philippines. It is very light and should be worn untucked over an undershirt. It is a common wedding and formal attire for Filipino men as well as women.

Lumban, Laguna is known for its barong weavers.

Masskara souvenirs from Bacolod City. Dubbed as City of Smiles, Bacolod masskara comes in different forms; necklace big and small, face mask, masks for display, and you can even buy masskara that were used in the Masskara Festival street dance competition. I got mine for only P 500. I didn’t buy the one I wore in the photo. It’s just for photo op. Hehe…There are also other good finds in Bacolod like this pen holder given by Rhyme.

Good finds at the beach:

Sarong / Tubao. I got these from Puerto Galera. Beach Sarongs / Tubaos as more silky than those being weaved by indigenous peoples in Mindanao

Silky pants tie-dyed to have creative design. I got this from Cagayon de Oro but it doesn’t fit me. Wah…
Anklet is an ornament worn around the ankle. This is historically had been worn for centuries by women in India though in other western countries and people hitting the beach, it has become fashionable even with men. I have a couple of anklets before but I can’t find them now. Huhu…

I haven’t been to Palawan but I got souvenirs from friends. I got the shell from Marj and the turtle replica from Perf. The long bamboo instrument is a rainmaker that Joanne gave me from one the WOW Philippines Palawan Showcase in Intramuros, Manila years ago. Inside the bamboo are stones or mongo seeds and whenever it is turned upside down, it creates a sound similar to that of the rain. So relaxing…

There are several religious items I got from our retreats and recollections in our school from grade school to college. I have a six-decade rosary from DLSU where the last decade is for the devotion to the Mother Mary. I have a crucifix key chain made of copper wire from Saint Michael Retreat House in Antipolo City. I also have several rosaries made from shells, plastic, and wood with carving. The wooden crucifix came from Baguio City.

I have a shoulder bag with ethnic design. The design is similar to the bag used by Aga Mulach in the movie “All My Life.” Hehe.. I got this from a student volunteers’ congress years ago. I also have table runner with interesting embroidery.

These wooden items (coin bank and wooden container) were given by our students in Divine Word College in Bangued, Abra during our Summer of Service in 2005. I served as adviser to student volunteers who conducted tutorial and leadership sessions while I facilitated modules for teachers to enhance their computer skills. We were also with our fellow deaf volunteers. There is a small population of deaf in Bangued so interaction between them and our students was very inspiring because they get to encourage their respective communities to enhance their skills and manage cultural differences.

Baguio goodies less the sweets. I have the ever famous ‘pangkamot’ (hehe..), wooden crucifix, wooden chime that has replica of ‘Bahay Kubo’ or Nipa Hut (traditional Filipino house), bracelet, key chain, and wooden tray. Sorry, no ‘man in a barrel’ here.

Finally I got a tambol or bongo or whatever you like to call it. I was looking for one many years ago and I bought this in one of the shops during the 2008 Masskara Festival in Bacolod. I got this for P 230 pesos. ‘Tambol’ or drum is a member of the percussion group and are the world’s oldest and most ever-present musical instrument. The basic design has remained virtually unchanged for thousand years. These are considered as ‘untuned instruments.’

There are so many things to be thankful for this year and what better way to do this, I believe is to be closer to heaven. I haven't been to Sagada and I hope I can go there before the year ends. Some of my friends and some online reviews already testified that it is worth the journey and I think it's my turn to experience it.

Speaking of Sagada, I remember having a copy of Let Your Spirit video of Noel Cabangon which is part of Prayers Wrapped in Song and the album Something More produced by Jesuits Communications. It features the scenery of Sagada and the song is an invitation by itself to take that one journey towards letting your spirit free.

I bacame a follower of Noel when we invited him in our school for a concert way back in 2002. That was my first major project in my first job. I also decided then to have my hair shaved only to find out that it will not grow the same way. I now have HIV. But it's worth the conviction for I learned a lot of things from Noel especially on being grounded to oneself.

I haven't watch his gigs for a long time now. The last time I saw him was during a concert in DLSU when my volunteer friend invited me. Looking forward to be continuously inspired by his music. And also looking forward to visit Sagada.

Masskara Festival in Bacolod City

It has been my second straight year visiting Bacolod for their annual Masskara Festival. It is one of the most popular festivals in the Philippines and also known in the world due to its rich history. The Masskara Festival was a product of the sugar industry downfall where the locals together with the government, artists and other organization planned to have a festival that would celebrate triumph of its people despite adversities. Masskara is derived from Mass, which means people and Kara, which means faces.

According to Bacolod Tourim Office, the MassKara Festival of Bacolod City has repeatedly represented the country in some major festivals in Asia, notably in the Chinggay Festival in Singapore in 1998, the Lunar Festival of Hong Kong in 2001, in the International Tourism Festival of Shanghai in 2004 and in the Midosuji Festival Parade of Osaka, Japan, emerging as champion in the foreign category and first runner-up in the local category - the first award to be given to a foreign participant in the 10-year history of that Japanese festival.

The Masskara Street Dance Competition is divided into several categories. It has school, barangay and open categories. The dancers will have to participate in a street parade while the culmination of their performance is done on the public plaza. During our first masskara visit, we were fortunate to have a seat in the plaza because there were so many people both local and foreign who wanted to see the competition. We weren't able to grab a seat in the plaza in our second masskara visit though.

From October 1st up to the weekend closest to Oct 19, the streets around the Public Plaza are transformed into a party strip. In its second year, Lacson Street is also closed where festivities happen as part of the festival’s highlights.

October 18 also features charter day countdown where people party till midnight to celebrate the cityhood of Bacolod (October 19).

I like the idea behind the Masskara because it strengthens resiliency of Filipinos and makes us more proud of our culture and heritage.

FOOT NOTEs:

1. Book in a hotel near city proper during Masskara Festival because major roads are usually closed during parades and other activities. Suggested hotel is BACOLOD CHECK-INN for it's located right at the back of Bacolod City Hall. It's near Araneta Avenue. (where street dance competitions are being held), public plaza, SM Bacolod, downtown, and where else, Manokan Country. Do not go outside the City during major activities for you will miss half of your life.

2. Have Photo Op with the Masskara Dancers. You may see them during the street dance competition along Araneta Avenue. For better photos, you may find them at the back of the public plaza where they rest while waiting for their turn to performance. They are so accomodating and willing to give a smile for your souvenir photo.

3. Buy Masskara Souvenir. Souvenirs are literally located any where within the vicinity of the public plaza. There are also souvenir shops along the streets near the plaza. Masskara sovenir comes in different forms from necklace to the actual Masskara used during the performances. Yes, some of them sell their Masskara especially during the last night of the festival. Try to get the best price. I bought my Masskara (the one used in the competition) for only P 500 from it's orginal price of around P 1,500.

4. Have dinner along Lacson during the Electric Masskara. The street was so crowded so make sure you go there right before the start of the activities. You may choose to it in any of the food stall or you may want to try fancy restarants offerings good and cozy ambiance. It's unfortunate that we chose the expensive resto because other resto's were packed with lots of people.

5. Don't miss the charter countdown. Get enough sleep in the afternoon of October 18 so you will be alive by midnight. There are different concert stages setup near the City Proper to cater to different genres and accomodate a huge crowd.

6. Eat at Mama Maria's during Charter Day Parade. I think their bigger branch is located along Lacson and that is where the Charter Parade starts so dining in Mama Mari's during this time gives you the best seat in the City. This Italian Pizza Resto claims to have the largest Pizza in the Philippines. They also now offer pasta meals but we are not so sure about that because the noodle they used was not Italian so it didn't taste like one.

PITSTOP: How I Eat My Bacolod Chicken Inasal

When you go to Manokan Country in Bacolod, you get to see several restaurants that offer authentic Bacolod chicken inasal but the best among them (at least for us) is Nena’s Beth Manokan. Their chicken is tastier compared to others (I have tried other inasal before). When you pass by Manokan, just ignore those people who call your attention to dine in their place and go directly to Nena’s. It is located somewhere in the middle of that strip.

You may order inasal from pecho-pak (chicken breast with wings), pecho (chicken breast), thigh, pak-pak (wings), article (chicken intestine), chicken heart, chicken liver, tinae (chicken ass), etc. The price ranges from P 10 (for chicken organs and other parts) to P 55 (for chicken inasal). You may also want to try talaba. They do not provide spoon and fork so make sure you wash your hands in their hand washing area.

As you get your order, there’s chicken oil in every table (orange-like sauce) that you may put in your rice. I call it panampal sa kanin. Don’t forget to make your own soy sauce with kalamansi that would compliment with your inasal. Also ask the waiter for their special garlic, just make sure you request for that right before you order because it runs out easily.

Eating chicken inasal is always a feast and there’s no time to chew because it is so delicious. That extra rice will surely destroy your diet. During our stay in Bacolod for the last two Masskara Festivals, I think we ate at Manokan almost, if not every day. I even ordered a piece of chicken that I brought home to Manila as my dinner. Worth it!

2. Order ahead of time if you're planning to bring home some inasal. They would be glad to pack your order so you have check-in your inasal in your luggage.

3. Manokan Country is not a fine dining strip of restaurant so they don't give you spoon and fork unless you ask for it (i haven't tried asking though coz I don't see the need)

4. Order all the food you want at once for it takes time to prepare, especially during peak hours.

Getting Fit in Mambukal, Murcia

I made sure to pass my stress test in MMC before heading back to Bacolod to see MassKara Festival for a second straight year with my office friends Marj, Shing, Lotty, John, Jini, and JP. Luckily, my test was satisfactory. Mambukal is making hype every time one goes to Bacolod or Negros Occidental. It’s a 45-minute drive from a Bacolod terminal to Murcia. The bus will stop right at the gate of Mambukal. The Mambukal Resort lies 1,200 feet or about 366 meters above sea level and serves as a gateway to the Mount Kanlaon Volcano.

It was redeveloped as online reviews said and it offers several physical activities that would challenge your limits. We tried the wall climbing. During my college days, I can still climb the wall up to the top and rappel on the other side. This time I wasn't able to do so because of my weight. But my lame excuse was, the sun was up and the rocks were a bit hot that I could not hold them properly.

After a hefty lunch, we started walking uphill to see the seven falls that Mambukal boasts. Out of seven, we only reached the fourth falls. It was fun but so tiring. Along the trail, you will several rock formations, bats, canopy walk and other sights. As we went back to our room, we took the different trail to better appreciate Mambukal.

Some of my office friends took a swim right after but some of us decided to stay in our room and chose to rest after the long walk. Hehehe…I guess it’s time to get fit. Hay..

1. Getting there. Murcia is only a twenty-minute drive from Bacolod City by private car, about 30 to 45 minutes by Public Utility Vehicles, and flying this route can reach the municipality in almost the same time. Bus fare from Bacolod to Murcia is P 35.00

Sights in Silay City

In one of our visits to Bacolod, we visited the relatives of Shing and went to interesting places in Silay for our side trip. The New Bacolod-Silay Airport is now open.

Silay City, located in the province of Negros Occidental is a second class city that has become the site of the new Bacolod-Silay International Airport. With its large collection of perfectly preserved heritage houses where thirty of these have been declared as historical landmarks, the city is often referred to as the “Paris of Negros”. It has been declared a museum city, second to VIgan in Ilocos Sur.

The San Diego Pro-cathedral is an early 20^th century church in Silay, which is the only pro-cathedral outside Manila. It is formerly known as the San Diego Parish Church or the St. Didacus Parish Church before its declaration as a pro-cathedral in 1994. It is the only church in Negros Occidental that has a cupola or dome.

Balay Negrense in Silay City is the first museum in the province of Negros Occidental that features lifestyle in the late 19^th-century Negrense. It was an ancestral house of Victor F. Gaston built in 1971 and acquired by Negros Cultural Foundation with the help of Department of Tourism to facilitate restructuring and repair that led to its inauguration as a museum in October 6, 1990.

The recently opened Bacolod-Silay City International Airport has a primary runway of 45 meters (150 ft) wide and 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) long.

FOOT NOTE:

I first visited Silay in 2004 during our Summer of Service in Brgy. Bagtic where we were partnered with local student volunteers and had immersion and leadership and arts and craft workshop. It is where we helped build a fence in one of the lands by mixing cement and piling up hollow blocks. It was tiring but it was fulfilling. We even helped the farmers remove grasses from the sugar cane plantation and till the land so they may plant their crops. On our way there, the new airport was still being constructed so there were tons of dust on our faces as we cross the construction area. But now, Bacolod has a new airport situated in Silay City which is a bit small compared to others but comfortable enough to accomodate passengers.

It was raining when we decided to visit Lakawon Island in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental. It was a one or two hour trip from Bacolod. One may take Ceres Bus from a terminal in Bacolod and ask the bus conductor to drop you on that point where you have to ride tricycle to reach the seaside. The boat ride took around 30 minutes. Luckily the rain stopped as we arrived in Lakawon but the island seemed to be secluded though there is a resort that offers simple accommodation and facilities.

My friends seemed not enjoying our day tour because of the whether and the tide was low. But that did not stop me from taking some pictures that made me appreciate the island better. Again, it’s an ideal beach for me; quiet and serene.

The only setback for me was the service in the resort facility. The food was so expensive, took several minutes to prepare, but not satisfying because the serving was limited. I thought it should be a good idea to bring your own food and have a picnic by the beach. Or I don’t know, maybe the resort is not prepared that day because of the whether.

Our team was invited by Pen’s family to Lopez, Quezon. At first I didn’t know what to expect coz the last time I have been to Quezon was during one of relief operation where the sights were not that good. We stayed at Pen’s family house and enjoyed very good food prepare by her mom. It was worth the trip. The following day, we went to Pulo Niyugan, an island near the municipality. Going there was an adventure because you have to ride the trolley while you appreciate the surroundings. There were fresh buko and off course sumptuous meal prepared for us. We were spoiled…It rained during our stay in the island but it didn’t stop us from having pictorials.

Lunch was served in a big balsa. It was a good time to bond with our fellow teammates. On our way home, we get to appreciate other sights such as the Quezon National Forest Park and the Bituka ng Manok (zigzag road in Atimonan, Quezon). On our way home, they bought buko pie in Colette’s. Personally, I like The Original Buko Pie in Los Banos.

Zambales’ Hidden Treasures: Camara and Capones Islands and Anawangin Cove

Toni just came from Canada for a vacation and as we all wanted to have an escape, Liz suggested to visit a place in San Antonio, Zambales. We slept in Weiss’ house then got ready for a trip with Liz, Toni, Mitch, Mabeth, Johann and JC. Hmmm..Ben was out of sight. As we reached Pundaquit, San Antonio, Zambales, we stayed at Nena’s Resort for that would be our staging point going to different islands nearby.

First stop, we took a boat ride going to Camara Island. It’s the nearest island in Pundaquit where we grilled our own lunch as we reminisced our college days. It was a small island that boasts of unspoiled surroundings. After lunch and petiks moments, we took another boat ride going to Capones Island.

Capones Island has a lighthouse but unfortunately we only saw if from a far because we arrived there late and it may take several minutes to reach the lighthouse. I noticed unique rock formations and the same clean surroundings. We took a different route going back to Pundaquit to better appreciate Capones and Camara Islands.

That night, we gazed through the stars after a night of booze while we remembered the ups and downs of college life. Ahahah…The following day, we headed to Anawangin Cove. It’s a bit far from the two other islands but it was worth the ride. It was undeveloped. The boatman even talked to one of the locals just to inform them of our presence. We also cooked our own lunch as we enjoyed the beach and the forest that surrounds the area. It was a perfect picture of nature’s wonder! There’s the beach, forest and mountain as your back drop. It’s sad to see though that some of the forest areas were now gone.

FOOTPRINTS: A Real Lesson

It was so real, indeed! I never knew our trip to Real, Quezon would bring realizations about myself, my faith, and my life journey. It all started when we wanted to have a first hand account of what to expect in Quezon so that we can prepare if we will deliver our relief goods for the victims of several typhoons that hit the province, especially Real, Infanta and Nakar Quezon. Deeply moved by the situation, I did not hesitate to join with bottled water, a couple of crackers, an extra shirt; a new boots, three hundred pesos and a large fries on hand expecting everything will go smoothly.

BROKEN DREAMS. Nature’s wrath took its toll as it destroyed hundreds of houses and killed many people in Quezon Province.

A Roadless Travel

We arrived in Magsaysay, Sinilaon, Laguna around 10 am. There we met other members of the group who volunteered to trek to Real to deliver goods for Infanta and Nakar, Quezon. The plan was to transport relief goods to Maragondon, Real, Quezon and bring them to Ungos, Real, Quezon. After our lunch in Maragondon, we started to trek to bring the goods to the people. I was carrying three “trapals” and wore my new boots. Along the way, you would see the remnants of the disaster that hit the province. The once serene view of Sierra Madre Mountains is now a picture of hopelessness and suffering. There were portions in our trail that I thought part of the mountain but I realized it was part of the national road going to Real, Infanta, and Nakar. Pile of rocks, logs, thick mud and even dead bodies surrounded the affected areas. You really have to be careful in walking so that you will not fall on thick mud or in the cliff.

PARADISE LOST. A once serene view of Sierra Madre Mountains is now a remnant of other people’s greed and abuse of our environment.

I did not know what to do when my left leg fell on think mud. I asked for help because it was very hard to pull my leg. When I saw two men, I just humbly asked them to help me and I was very thankful because they did not hesitate. There were also some parts where you have to cling on the roots just to cross thick mud. As I try my best to cross this area, people behind us shouted that rocks were falling. When I looked behind me, I saw three to four big rocks that anytime could kill one of us. The rocks that fell were five persons behind us. Most of us panic but I tried to my best to carry my stuff because I thought it is important. One radio reporter suffered a minor injury but thank God we were all safe. As we reach Barangay Tignoan, I noticed the pile of logs that jammed the bridge. It was unimaginable how these logs were trapped there. The locals told us that during Typhoon Winnie, the flood was above the bridge. Unimaginable, indeed! After we cross the bridge, we stopped at the school to rest and arrange boats going to Barangay Ungos.

A ROADLESS TRAVEL. People from different walks of life pass by one of the landslides just to get relief goods in Brgy. Maragondon, Real, Quezon. Others trek just to deliver goods in Tignoan, Real Quezon and other areas.

Paradise Lost?

On our way to Tignoan, I noticed there were many people walking. Some were going to Tignoan to bring relief goods while some were going to Maragondon just to get relief goods. Barangay Maragondon became a temporary staging area of the military for relief operation. People went to us to beg for food. I was hungry that time and seeing these people in need, I realized I have to be strong for them. I need to have energy because I knew the travel would not be easy and there were more people inside the town that need relief.

During our trek, I saw one lady who was carrying two big bags on her back and two big plastics. She told me she is from Manila and she and her husband will visit their relatives in Infanta, Quezon to bring some clothes and food because they are now starving. I saw in her eyes her genuine concern and her determination to get there. I realized that I was just carrying a bag of flashlights and yet I was already complaining to myself.

A REMINDER TO ALL. Logs in the neighborhood of Brgy. Tignoan, Real, Quezon remind people of the importance of trees.

Bayanihan was also evident. Elders, ladies and children were being assisted by other people as they struggle to cross the road full of thick mud. I was moved by the images that I started to assist people who had a hard time walking. As I helped people cross, one man said loudly, “Kaya nyo yan! Kami nga nakaya namin kayo pa kaya?” I smiled when I heard his words of encouragement. I did not expect that a person who is in the lowest point of his life would still feel a sense of hope. I used his statement as my personal mantra that time and when I encountered another man who hopelessly sighed and said, Hay! Buhay! I just smiled and said, “Masarap pong mabuhay!” He smiled back at me.

The images that I saw made me think that this paradise is lost but I knew that behind the ruins, cries and suffering, there lies the survivors who believe that there would still be life after this.

Becoming One of Them

After our much deserved rest in Brgy. Tignoan, we went to the seaside to ride a boat going to Brgy. Ungos. This barangay was the only area that was not affected by the typhoons and will serve as a staging area of donations for Infanta and Nakar members of the charismatic community. Getting there was not easy since it was raining and waves were very big. As we wait for our boat, I started to worry for I thought going there would be tough and I did not have a life jacket. I did not know what to do when I reached the boat. All my things were wet and I thought we were in a brink of loosing our lives. During the whole trip, I was just looking at the inner side of the boat waiting for the worse. I started to bargain for my life. In every waves that hit the boat, I remembered everyone close to me; my family, my friends, my classmates, and the volunteers among others. I tried to remember all the happy and sad moments that we spent together and it made me realize I still want to live.

When we finally reached Brgy. Ungos, we hugged one another and just simply sighed, “God is good!.” We were not able to go back to Tignoan because the weather was very bad and the boatman run out of gasoline. Soaked in seawater, we were desperate to change our clothes. It’s a good thing that there were kind locals who lent shorts to us and even offered their houses if we have no place to stay. It was ironic how the relief operation volunteers became the ones who needed relief.

The next morning, the group decided to return home by taking a boat going to Mauban, Quezon for it was impossible to return to Tignoan and take the same route. The sea was calm and we were optimistic that we can go home. Everyone was happy as we travel but during its course, we noticed that there were many logs in the sea that anytime could bump in every boat that will pass the area. All of a sudden, there was one huge log that bumped on our boat. We ignored the incident until the boatman stopped at the middle of the sea. He said rain will start to pour and waves might hinder us from arriving safely in Mauban. The boatman might be telling the truth for during that time, strong winds hampered us from sailing smoothly. This made me worried again but this time more prepared for anything that could happen. I just hoped that if the boat will sink, it will happen where there are many logs so that we can cling into it since we did not have enough life jackets. I prayed that the logs that killed hundreds of people would save us from drowning.

We then realized that the reason why we returned was because the log that bumped damaged the boat and water was starting to flow at the back as the crew tried their best to remove the water. One army member who was with us in that trip already contacted their station for a possible rescue.

As we were very desperate to go home, we took our chances in the Port of Real and ask the navy if we could possibly hitch in their ship going to Mauban, Quezon. The navy’s ship is being used to deliver relief goods and other equipments from Mauban to Real, Infanta, and Nakar, Quezon. I was surprised when I saw an exodus of hundreds of people who were also waiting to ride the ship because most of them wanted to leave their place and look for other opportunities in other areas or live with their relatives. It was fortunate that the navy accommodated us all. In every corner of the ship you would see different faces of suffering, grief and desperation. Most of us were very hungry, tired, and needy just like us. There were many people who started to feel dizzy because of fatigue and bad weather condition. Most of us shared what we have just to get rid of our condition that time.

I also started to get dizzy and was on the brink of vomiting. I have not eaten lunch and only had a piece of bread and coffee for breakfast. There was one time when I was sleeping when the heavy rain fell and big waves started to bump our ship. Due to hardship that we felt that time, tears started to fall from my eyes. It was the time when I did not question anything that I saw and felt.

As we finally reached the Mauban Port, I realized that at some point we experienced what the people of Quezon experienced. It was really tough. At some point you wanted to breakdown but the people around you made you think otherwise. This gave me a clearer picture of how people struggled during the typhoons, grieved for the lost of their loved ones and managed to go on with their lives.

Faith Experience

We had an opportunity to have a small sharing about our experiences when we were in Ungos. I told everyone that the reason why I survived was because of their faith. Their attribution of all things to God constantly reminded me that faith would move mountains, calm seas and touch hearts. They did not worry for they believe that God is always here for us even in our lowest point. I was crying sometimes because I did not understand why these happened but their community’s perspective reminded me that there is a reason for everything and all you need to do is to trust God.

To Live is to Cherish

It was an experience worth holding onto for it made me a renewed person. It also helped me realize that part of valuing life is stewardship. We must love the environment as much as we love ourselves and I believe we must start now. The logs that ravaged Quezon and other provinces are constant reminder to everyone and it will happen again unless we start caring for our environment.

Our so-called sufferings during our stay in Quezon might be over but the images and stories of people remain and continue to challenge us to take part in the process of rebuilding their lives. Hope we continue to extend our hands to them and be a source of hope. Let us constantly remind one another of the importance of faith even in this trying time. Let us continue to do all our actions for the love of Him. Live Jesus in our hearts forever!

What’s with Cagayan De Oro?

I’ve been to Cagayan De Oro twice, both for job-related reasons. Me and my co-volunteers Pao, Miks, and Boni attended a national volunteers’ summit. Aside from visiting the Capitol Building and strolling around the city, I am personally not aware of some other tourist attractions like water rafting due to our limited stay. But every time we go there, we ate in a restaurant where they serve buffet that offers quality beef meals. It’s so good! It’s a good thing the organizer of the summit wasn’t able to feed us properly, this gave us excuse to feast on this restaurant. No offense, but I personally loved it.

We were surprised that SM CDO closes at 9 p.m. We went there around 8:30 p.m. to eat before watching a movie but we noticed chaos outside only to find out that people were already going out of the mall because it was about to close. We asked the guard about the movie sked and we knew there’s no such thing as last full show. Hehehe…

Several hours from the city, we were toured in the municipality of Opol in Misamis Oriental where they oriented us about their good local governance practice. We even visited the ostrich and crocodile farm. The best part of the tour was when the mayor treated us in a local floating restaurant by the sea. Sarap ng libre!

From what I know, CDO is a gateway to Bukidnon and Camiguin. It’s on my list of possible destinations. Hope I could go there someday.

Holy Week in Galera

It was in 2004 when Vange, Vince and I decided to spend our Holy Week in Puerto Galera. It was not properly planned but when Holy Tuesday came, we already packed our things and headed for a long vacation. It was a good escape. We had a hard time looking for accommodation due to huge crowd having exodus from city life. We tried to look for the cheapest place as we even tried to check some houses that offer home stay. NO offense but we found certain houses that reminded us of outreach programs that we usually do before. As we head back to the beach front to think of our future, Kuya Eloy and Ate Rica approached us and suggested their place. We were hesitant because it was far from the beach front and we assumed that it was a home stay arrangement. It was a long walk but to our surprise, it was a new house with several rooms. It has a living room, kitchen and its own fence. They gave the best deal so we gave in knowing that we can also buy and cook our own food.

That night, we sat by the beach and met some Korean friends from our school and drunk some booze which continued for the entire week. What’s funny was we found out that our budget was becoming limited so we even debated on whether to buy drinks or not in our last night because we would only have less than a hundred pesos and ATM machines are available either in Calapan or Batangas Port. We paid our accommodation using our well-treasured bills and coins.

That place (it has no name) is highly recommended for groups who want to have a quiet place in Galera. When we had our office planning and teambuilding on that same place, we reserved the place and made it our own. They even left us as they were out to celebrate their anniversary. Ahahah…They were very accommodating and trusting. Given a chance, I would choose that place instead of a beach front with a possibility of tsunami (kidding).

Side Trip in the North

After relaxing in Pagudpud, take time to visit several sights in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. We went to Paoay Church on our way home. According to www.waypoints.ph, it is a dream come true to be able to visit Paoay Church,the best known earthquake Baroque church in the Philippines which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The cornerstone of the church was laid by the Augustinian missionaries in 1704 while the cornerstone of the belfry was laid in 1793. The people already used it even before completion in 1894,but it was formally inaugurated on February 28,1896. It is said that large coral stones were used for the lower level of the church structure,and bricks were used for the upper levels. The walls which were made of coral blocks,tree sap,lumber and stucco-plastered bricks are 1.67 meters (more than 3 feet) thick,and are supported by 24 massive buttresses of intricate design.The church was partially destroyed twice by earthquakes in 1706 and 1927.In the restoration,permanent columns were built to support the ceiling. Today,this uniquely beautiful church still stands, wowing tourists with its majestic structure of Oriental,Gothic and Baroque influences.

When you drive a couple of minutes, you may visit the moselium of Marcos and the Marcos Musuem.

On your way to Vigan, you will pass by Quirino Bridge that separates Ilocos Norte and Sur. It was breath taking. You may try their local empanada and my personal favorite Basi, not to mention the vigan longanisa and other local dishes. The Heritage Site in Crisologo Streets will always remind you of the lifestyle during the Spanish Era. You may also buy souvenirs and other delicacies made by the locals.

These cities have their own charm which you cannot find in our places. They managed to sustain development while maintaining the richness of their heritage. It’s worth the long drive.

Life’s a Beach in Pagudpud

I’ve been to Pugudgud, Ilocos Norte twice and I must say it is my ideal beach. For me, going to the beach is a time to have fun while being one with nature. We stayed at Polaris Beach House with my officemates/friends. It’s a simple beach house (compared to other resorts in the area) but you would get a good ambiance and warm welcome of its staff. As the house is being managed by Ate Me-Ann, they always make sure to give you comfort.

The coastal resort town of Pagupud is located in the northernmost tip of Luzon and bounded by the town of Bangui in the south, Cordillera Mountain in the east, town of Adams, Cagayan and South China Sea in the western and northern parts. It is 45 miles north of Laoag City and around 350 miles north of Manila. Pagudpud is famous for its white-sand beaches and blue water.

The Blue Lagoon located northward is considered as an emerging attraction because of its secluded beach. It is found on Maira-ira Point.

One of the things that made me biased on Pagudpud is its simplicity. You can walk around the beach without hearing noises coming from a nearby bar and you can reflect and just commune with nature. Though you will find several resorts in Brgy. Saud, it manages to maintain its calmness especially as the sun sets within your eyes. If you want to look for other beaches in the area, you may go to Blue Lagoon that is undeveloped but features a lovely beach that is at par with that of Saud. They also have what they call ‘Boracay of the North’ which you may reach when you walk northward from your beach front. On my first trip, we took a boat ride to reach that part of the beach only to find out that you can go there on foot. Tsk!

If you’re palate leads you to seafoods and local dishes, you may ask the local Carinderia to cook for you for a minimal amount. As a side trip, you may also visit the Patapat viaduct when you go northward and the Windmill in Bangui before going back to Manila.

No Spooky in Roxas City

It was a summer of service season and the next assignment was Roxas City were we provided training in leadership and sports. It was my first time to ride Superferry. It was quite interesting because there were so many things you can do in the ship as you try to burn several hours just to get to your destination.

As we begun our training sessions, the first emphasis said by one of the students was, ‘hindi kami multo’ which reminded me that Capiz (it’s capital is Roxas City) is perceived as a place with many ‘aswang’. The city, though simple compared to other cities, is dubbed as the seafood capital of the Philippines. No wonder manang in the school’s canteen was a very good cook. She spoiled us with lots of seafood. If you want to have more, you may take a tricycle and visit Baybay beach and eat in any of the restaurant along the seaside.

There were also many bars were you can hang out. I was surprised seeing high school students inviting us to be at a party in their local bars. But I had fun though time was not enough because we had to finish our duties and do our own laundry knowing there were laundry shops nearby. Hehe…

When you’re there, try to visit the biggest bell in Asia located in one of the municipalities in Capiz. It’s sad I just lost of pictures in Roxas. Huhu…

Dumaguete: Pit Stop to Marine Wonders

Liz and I were invited to attend the wedding of our colleagues in Dumaguete but instead of going directly, we came from Cebu to reflect on work and our being young (bwahaha…). We stayed in Honey Comb Inn as we reached Dumaguete from a Cebu-Bohol- Dumaguete Super Cat trip. There we met other officemates and friends. I remember eating in Lab-as Restaurant where food was so good. I also noticed that there are a number of good restaurants that offer different cuisines.

After a long day, you may stroll in Rizal Boulevard. It’s a like Bay Walk (then) that offers nothing but sea breeze and a laid back ambiance. Don’t forget to try balut and other local street foods along the boulevard as you cap the night. Siliman University is also around the corner, it’s worth visiting for its rich history.

From Dumaguete, we travelled southward going to Zamboanguita where you may take a boat ride from Malatapay going to Apo Island. It is a marine sanctuary where you can snorkel and dive. Since we’re not divers, we just snorkeled the whole day that we almost forgot that the tide was getting low. I remember having some bruises on my chest and feet because of low tide. I felt like being in an aquarium. The sea creatures were so alive that you would treasure that moment you’re with them. It’s a good thing the local government is doing their best to preserve their marine wonders.

For our lunch, we bought parrot fish and lobsters that cost only a hundred bucks. That size may be purchased in a seafood resto for 300 pesos. It was so cheap. The locals even cooked for us for a minimal fee. It was a feast!

We were tanned during the wedding but it’s okay coz we enjoyed the trip. Next time, I hope we can go to Bais to watch dolphins swim.

Filthy Rich in Cebu

Liz and I planned to go to Cebu before attending a wedding in Dumaguete since we were given long vacation leaves. We were not sure where we will stay in Cebu so we just phoned one resort while we were waiting for our flight. It’s a good thing the resort we stayed in offers airport transfer so we conveniently arrived in the City. The resort was in Mactan Island and we found out there was no other means of transportation going to the City proper. I was not sure if that was a good idea but the resort owner also owns a rent a car service so for lack of choice we gave in.
The resort was a haven for divers. It has a pool but their beach is not the ideal beach you always picture when you’re in Cebu. But as a consolation, the food was great and the service was above standard. Touring the city proper required us to rent a car. It was expensive but we were able to see some of the landmarks in Cebu. One has to try manok bisaya (but I have personal bias in Bacolod Inasal). As the night fell, our service picked us up in Ayala Center Cebu, concluding our being filthy rich. The magic of plastic card worked in Cebu but the experience was priceless.
Moral lesson: plan your trips properly.

Mindoro Sling

It’s not about Mindoro Sling that you may drink in Puerto Galera. It’s about our once in a lifetime adventure in Mindoro. Vane, as we fondly called her, and her family has a mini-farm in Mindoro and her photography group with Franco, Mike and the rest of members decided to have a trip. Me and Jo decided to join even if we don’t have professional camera and not members of that group. Franco and Mike slept in my apartment so we would be early for the first trip from Buendia going to Batangas port. We took a Super Cat going to Calapan where Vane’s mom fetched us. We stayed in their rest house in their farm. The following day, we trek the river side going to the mountains until we reached a tribe of Mangyans. At first, we were questioned by the elders because of the cameras. They later understood there was no malice in visiting the place, it’s just that we were exploring the area

As we went down the mountain, we took a different route that almost made us explore the entire place. There we were fetched by a jeepney going to our rest house. It was so tiring. They even tried to teach me how to swim in the river with no success. Hehe…Though I can swim with a life jacket. After several nights in their farm, we went to Talipan (I hope I remembered it correctly) in Puerto Galera where we were welcomed by the white sand beach and calming sea waters. We even saw the Tamaraw Falls on our way there.

It was a memorable trip. I wonder where Vane is now…

Follow Your Foots

I love seeing new places. It’s a good thing my previous job allowed me to explore different places in the Philippines. I enjoyed it because even if you’re working, you get a chance to appreciate the country side and experience different cultures that would make you more proud of our being Filipino. But now, I try my best to still see places. This photo travel blog is created with the aim of documenting places I visited, sharing my personal insights, and valuing my experiences with my friends/family during these trips. My travel photos (and those of my friends and family) may not be the perfect picture but these hopes to encourage everyone to follow your own foot and see where your trips would lead you.

So far, I’ve been to the following places in Luzon: Pagudpud, Laoag, Vigan, Paoay, Batac, Abra, Anawangin, Camara and Capones Island, Baguio, Subic, Pampanga, Batangas, Mindoro, Laguna, Rizal, Quezon, etc.

In Visayas: Cebu, Iloilo, Roxas City, parts of Capiz, Bora, Bacolod, Cadiz, La Carlota, Dumaguete, Apo Island, Cebu, etc.

In Mindanao: Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental
